Functional Medicine Appointments

Jessica Jimison, FNP-C, IFMCP

OCC’s Co-Founder and Functional Medicine Nurse Practitioner, Jessica Jimison, has a strong allopathic foundation and brings a rigorous, science-minded skepticism to everything she does. This, combined with her inquisitive, compassionate, open mind is what’s motivated her to dig deeper and explore pathologies that are often overlooked or poorly understood by others in her field.

Functional Medicine has been dubbed “root cause medicine.” However, at OCC we have broadened the aperture on root cause.

After years of offering the highest quality Functional Medicine interventions to her patients, it became clear to Jessica that there was something missing — something that all of her allopathic and in-depth Functional Medicine training and experience was failing to address.

A New Direction

Jessica, together with co-founder Micaela Giles, found the missing link to healing in Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory. The common thread among the people who have tried everything without success is that their autonomic nervous system is stuck in a state of protection such that the immune system is unable to shift into a healing mode.

With this foundational shift in approach, Jessica is able to harness the incredible brilliance and resilience that is contained within every human body. Jessica has a unique ability to listen to the signals of her patients’ bodies, identify dysfunctions, and then apply the wisdom of the Functional Medicine toolbox to restore function in the organ systems.

From there, she guides people to optimize their mitochondrial efficiency such that they achieve a level of vitality often not experienced in years or decades.

Layers of a cabbage …

People describe Functional Medicine as removing layers of an onion. But the amazing human body is far more complicated than onion layers. To simplify it in that way leads people to believe that

there’s always an obvious next step. I much prefer to think about our detective work as cabbage layers: we can see that there’s a problem, but figuring out what must be done in order to safely and effectively eliminate it will involve a bit of finesse, and is likely to reveal other issues need to then be addressed. We’ll get there, but we’ll likely unearth some obstacles along the way.

The knowledge you gain about the workings of the human body during the Foundations of Health Program will help us navigate your unique cabbage layers in our individual Functional Medicine Visits — making you an educated partner in the investigation and implementation of your treatment plan!

Team collaboration at every step.

The OCC Clinical Team meets regularly to discuss your progress, carefully tracking both improvements and hurdles, so we can learn valuable information from every input, elimination, and adjustment. The individual perspectives of your Clinical Team Members are invaluable for optimizing your gains. Truly integrated Functional Medicine—with you at the center!

What People Are Saying

“The [Functional Medicine] piece with Jess is always very thorough. All the details are explained. I don't feel as though there are any secrets. I feel a sense of agency in terms of my own healing.”

— Susan J.

“Jessica will dig so deep. It took me 10 years to get to where I am now. 10 years of looking for doctors and not finding answers. I was being told I was depressed or that I needed to volunteer and I would feel better. Jessica never told me any of that. She believed me right from the beginning, which was amazing to finally have someone say, ‘I know what you're going through. I know how to help you.’ It was just amazing.”
